The Ultimate Hair Coloring Guide

The Ultimate Hair Coloring Guide

One of the best feelings is getting your hair freshly styled at the salon and feeling absolutely beautiful with your new hairdo. Maybe you even added a splash of color to your hair too. Coloring your hair, whether it’s a quick shade or highlight that will complement your natural hair’s color, is always fun and is great to mix things up. While that’s all fun and good, you have to be careful not to damage your hair while color dyeing and be sure to keep up with the hair care that’s involved in maintaining your color-treated hair once you’ve colored it. The last thing you want is split ends, dryness or any other problems that may arise from color dyeing your hair without taking precautions. Don’t worry however, we at Endless Hair Extensions are here to help you make sure your hair coloring process goes smoothly and without any hitches or problems so you can enjoy your beautifully colored hair. We’ll be discussing tips and tricks from choosing the right hair products, to healthy hair habits, all the way to diet changes. Let’s jump right into the ultimate hair coloring guide!

Products

Opt for a Shampoo and Conditioner Specifically Made For Colored Hair

One of the easiest things you can do right away is to use shampoos and conditioners that are specifically made for colored hair. These hair products will ensure that there is zero damage to your hair roots and follicles before and after you color your hair. As we’ve talked about before on the blog, every hair product you use on your hair should align with your hair needs so your hair can reach its maximum potential as far as length and volume goes and be as healthy as possible. We of course recommend you opt for alcohol and sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners to keep your hair moisturized and not dried out. In fact, use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to give your hair the lustre it had before dyeing your hair.

Purple Shampoo

Purple shampoo is shampoo with purple pigments that help keep your undertones at bay. It’s a great way to tone or brighten your hair color while away from the hair salon and will fight against yellow, orange or brassy tones that might pop up in your hair over time, especially if you have blonde or brunette hair.

Hair Masks

Using hair masks is another awesome way to protect your color-treated hair. Even if you haven’t damaged your hair, it’s important to add hair masks into your hair care routine for maintenance and to keep your hair healthy as possible.

Diet Changes

The food that you put into your body directly relates to how your skin, nails, and hair looks and feels. When you drink the commonly recommended eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, you’ll notice not only a difference in how you feel but also how your body looks more vibrant as it receives the proper nutrition it needs. So it’s a good idea to be aware of your diet when it comes to your hair care routine and color dyeing your hair.

Iron-rich foods

Foods that have iron-rich proteins such as spinach, chicken, oysters help nourish your scalp and improve the texture and stimulates hair and keratin growth to strengthen the hair. Be sure to consume enough iron in your diet and eat foods such as meat, eggs, fish, etc.

Essential Vitamin A

Vitamin A is an essential vitamin to help fight against dry hair that’s been processed. It brings moisture to the scalp and shine into your hair again. Be sure to eat plenty of foods rich in Vitamin A like orange and yellow vegetables and fruits, fish, cheeses, and cooked kale.

Hair Extensions

If you’ve been dying to dye (get it?) your hair but aren’t sure if you want to take the plunge just yet, you can use hair extensions to add a highlight dash or quick shade change to your natural hair. Clip ins are a perfect way of testing the waters beforehand and/or if you see yourself changing your hair look up frequently, hair extensions are awesome to quickly switch out hair colors all without long-term commitment. If you change your hair color but don’t like the result, no big deal, simply take them out and try a different color!

Hair Habits to Keep Your Hair Healthy

Having and maintaining a healthy hair care routine is essential if you’re color-treating your hair often because processing your hair makes it more prone to damage. Not to worry however, once you incorporate these next bunch of tips and tricks into your hair care routine, you’ll be on your way to keeping your hair looking and feeling beautiful!

Don’t Shampoo as Often

A very simple way of preventing further damage to your colored hair, especially if you’re experiencing brittle ends and dryness, is to just shampoo less frequently. While we’ve already covered how to wash your hair and how often to do so, a good rule of thumb is 2 to 3 times a week so you don’t strip your hair’s natural oils and dry it out. Keeping the natural oils in your hair is key to maintaining healthy hair and nourishing any dry or otherwise damaged ends. A great alternative to regular shampooing, especially if you workout, is to dry shampoo and thus keep greasy roots at bay.

Trim your Hair Regularly

An easy solution to fix your broken or splits ends is to go to the hair salon for trims more often. The trick is to trim your hair every six to eight weeks or before the split ends occur because it’s impossible to undo them as the hair is literally split down the middle. This will ensure that your hair remains healthy and looks beautiful and vibrant.

Stay Out of The Sun and Away From UV Rays

Avoid staying in the sun for long periods of time as direct sun exposure and thus UV rays will damage your hair and even fade your hair color too. You see the sun not only lightens your hair, but also breaks down the natural chemical bonds in hair dye products, leaving your hair stripped and the dye faded. The fix to UV rays is simple, however: just stay out of the sun during peak times (the afternoon) and wear a hat or apply a product that has UV protection if you will be in the sun for a prolonged period.

Stay Away From Heat

Related to the sun and UV rays is heat of course. Since hair that’s been processed and dyed is quite weak, regular heat styling can further damage your hair and thus is something you should avoid as much as possible. Leave your hair natural and use hot tools only if needed or at maximum once or twice a week.

Beware of Chlorine

We’ve talked about protecting your hair before, during, and after swimming, so it should come as no surprise that we recommend you avoid as much contact with chlorine as possible and especially if your color-treat your hair. Chlorine will dry out your hair and leave it lifeless. Fun Fact: blonde hair will take on a shade of green if exposed to too much chlorine so it’s best to limit your time altogether. Read our guide on how to protect your hair while swimming here.

Utilize Deep Conditioning

Using deep conditioning is one of the most effective ways you can prevent damaged with color treated hair. Not only does a deep conditioning mask provide the moisture your hair needs but it also restores your hair follicles back to their beautiful healthy shine. We recommend deep conditioning with a hair mask at least once a week and more if possible.

Cold Water Instead of Hot Water

If you’ve just color dyed your hair, stick to using warm or cool water in the shower and definitely avoid hot water as it only strips out the dye. Rinsing your hair with cold water will also bring out the shine in your hair.

Conclusion

We hope you enjoyed this ultimate hair coloring guide and take these tips and tricks into consideration next time you’re deciding to color dye your hair!
