How to Fix Dry Hair

How to Fix Dry Hair

Let’s talk about dry hair, it’s causes and remedies to help you fight against this unsightly and potentially damaging hair issue. There are a number of factors that can cause dry hair from genetics and medication to the weather. Because every hair type is different, it may take some trial and error to get the right hair routine, but it’s essential that you do find the right one for the long-term health of your hair.

Let’s start with the reasons why you might have dry hair.

Extreme Temperatures

If you live in an area of the world with extreme temperatures, especially if you experience a four season change, then dry hair can be common as the variance in temperatures will strip your hair’s moisture. When the weather gets colder, you’ll notice that your hair becomes duller and may even experience hair loss due to hair dehydration.

Medications

If you’re on any sort of medication such as anti-depressants, high blood pressure medications, weight loss drugs, etc check the label and then research and talk to your doctor about the potential causes that may cause dry or thinning hair. Sometimes simply changing your medications can reverse adverse effects to your hair including dry or brittle hair.

Washing Your Hair Too Much or Too Little

Not sure whether you shampoo your hair too little, too much or just the right amount? While your hair quality will dictate how often you should wash your hair, a good rule of thumb is two to three times a week. Many girls will notice that their hair feels greasy or dirty if they don’t shampoo more often but if you shampoo too much, you’ll strip your hair of the natural oils that gives it the natural shine which leads to a dry itchy scalp and dry hair of course.

The reverse is true as well: too little shampooing will allow oils and products to build up and cause blockage. The solution for all of this is simple: shampoo the right amount of times a week and to supplement wet shampooing and conditioning with dry washing so you are still able to wash your hair. Dry shampooing will soak up any extra oils and breath life into your hair. Be sure not to dry shampoo too much however, as you will encounter the same issues as over or under shampooing!

Using Hot Tools Too Much

We’ve covered the warnings of being dependent upon the use of hot tools in your hair care routine, but we’ll quickly reiterate why it can cause hair breakage, brittle hair and overall damage. While your mileage may vary, keeping on the side of not using hot tools to style or dry your hair is best because using hot tools will break down the natural protective barriers that exist and overall weaken your hair strands. When you do decide to use hot tools, be sure to use a heat protectant, preferably a natural one before any heat touches your hair and if you’re constantly using hot tools to dry your hair, give air drying a shot which has a number of benefits outside of damage prevention.

Genetics

If none of the above applies to you, you might just have to thank you parents for your dry hair. Most of who we are comes from the genetics of your Mom or Dad, so if one or both of them have dry hair or scalp, there’s a decent chance you’ll have the same dire hair fate too.

Remedies for Fixing Dry Hair

Alright, so now that you know a few possible reasons why your hair might be dry, how do you go about fixing dry hair? You can start by thinking about what you expose your hair to regularly. Think about your shampoo or conditioner, any oils (such as Coconut Oil) that may contribute to your hair quality.

Argan Oil

Argan oil is one of many oils to include in your hair care routine and is full of awesome ingredients like vitamin E, fatty acids, antioxidants (which fight UV rays and guard against cell damage) to name a few. Argan oil is also a heat protectant which will moisturize your hair and help fight against dryness, brittleness and frizziness. Simply apply to your hair evenly and avoid touching your roots. Conclusion

Not only can dry hair be unsightly, it can also be a sign of a more serious problem. While you may be tempted to use shine products that claim to fix your dry hair issue, often times these products will coat the hair with wax and actually prevent your hair from absorbing your natural oils. The solution is not to keep throwing hair products at the problem but to simplify your hair care routine and allow your body’s natural oils to do their job of protecting and making your hair look and feel beautiful.

A few final points to remember: always know the ingredients in the hair products you use, make sure they are high-quality and that they are well suited for whatever your hair needs are. Don’t forget, your hair won’t be rid of the dryness overnight if you follow natural remedies and that’s okay as this is the best possible way to rejuvenate your hair.
