17 Best Shampoo For Different Hair Types: Part 2

17 Best Shampoos For Different Hair Types Part 2

Welcome back to the second part of our two-part series on the best shampoos for different hair types. We’re going to pick up with our shampoo recommendations for oily or greasy hair. You can read the first part here. Let’s jump right into it!

Shampoos recommended for oily/greasy hair

We recommend Degrease Moisture Control Shampoo by Maple Holistics because it’s formulated specifically for oily hair due to its fruit and herb extracts, essential oils such as rosemary, jojoba, lemon, etc and vitamin B5 that keeps your hair hydrated while also removing excess oil and sebum from your scalp.

Another good shampoo is Volumizing Dry Shampoo for Oily Hair by Love Hair. This is a dry shampoo which is perfect for those with seriously greasy hair. As we’ve said before, washing your hair too often only worsens the oil issue so this shampoo works wonders absorbing the extra grease and replenishing your hair, leaving it fresh and volumized.

Best shampoo types for damaged or brittle hair with split ends

If you find your hair falling out, getting tangled up, or simply brittle, your hair is most likely damaged and you need solutions to fix it pronto. Split ends not only look terrible, they aren’t healthy either. You need a shampoo to nourish your hair strands while tending to the damage.

Dry and damaged hair are both closely related but the approach to each is slightly different. You might believe the cure to brittle hair on the verge of breakage is moisturizing shampoos that will hydrate your hair strands, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Be sure you don’t confuse dry with damaged hair even if you actually have the same types. You need a shampoo loaded with protein for brittle/damaged hair.

Since your hair is made from protein, you need to make sure you’re getting enough in your diet. Proteins such as keratin will strengthen damaged hair and rebuild the hair strands. Those protein-rich shampoos will bring back the elasticity of your hair strands as well.

You want to look for amino acids, biotin, wheat protein, soy protein, etc in your shampoo, but you want to be careful not to use too much protein in your hair routine as too much will have negative consequences. It’s a balance between too much protein and on the other end, highly moisturized shampoo. You don’t want either extreme for damaged or brittle hair. The ideal shampoo is one in which balances the right protein and moisture mixture that will repair your damaged hair strands. Look for shampoos labeled “hair-repair” or the like and you should be good.

Common reasons for damaged or brittle hair and what to do about it

Over-washing. As mentioned countless times here on the blog, washing your hair too much only strips your hair of the natural oils so it’s best to stick to washing 2-3 times a week at most and if you must wash more due to exercise or otherwise, use a dry shampoo.

Over-processed or dyed/bleached hair. Overusing hot tools such as hair curlers or straighteners and any bleaching and coloring will damage your hair strands. If you must do these things, do them less often with the right conditioner and always use a heat protectant, a natural one preferably, before any hot tool use.

Infrequent haircuts. You might think the longer you go without getting a haircut will allow your hair to grow faster but the opposite is true. Regular trims will enable you to get rid of any split ends and keep your hair strands healthy. Try and get to the hair salon once every 3 months or at least a few times a year.

This one is packed full of nutrients and something called Keratin Amino Complex that restores the structure of your damaged hair strands and protects them against future breakage too. You can combine this shampoo with Damage Control also by Keranique for an even more potent mixture.

Best shampoo types for fine hair

Achieving that big hair look is in every girl’s dreams, but you may be wondering how you can get voluminous hair if you have thin or thinning hair without any sort of volume. There are a bunch of good practices for dealing with thin hair, but one of the first things you can do is to use the right shampoo type formulated for your hair type.

The shampoo that you use has a tremendous impact on your hair for good or bad. Using the wrong shampoo might exaggerate your hair problems. Even using a shampoo with silicone, alcohol or sulfates is a big no-no in addition to thick shampoos that weigh your hair down.

A volumizing shampoo works great with thin hair to boost and give your hair more volume due to such ingredients as panthenol, arginine-K complex, etc. You also want protein in your shampoo to strengthen the hair strands and actually increase their thickness. In other words, make sure whatever shampoo you choose has protein and a volumizing formula without any harmful extras such as silicone, sulfates or alcohol.

Common reasons for fine, flat hair and what to do about it

Grease. If your roots get oily soon after washing them, then the oil is actually weighing your hair down and thus making it seem flat. Using a dry shampoo with volumizing agents is key to absorbing the excess oil and then giving your hair a boost. It’s a delicate balance, however, for if the main cause of the flatness is due to grease, it’s best to use a shampoo designed for oily hair.

Stress as we’ve talked about before can cause many issues with your body’s health, not just with your hair. If you’re under a lot of stress, your hair will actually stop growing and thus make it appear flatter than it really is. Self-care along with proper rest and diet goes a long way in making sure you keep your stress levels down and hair growing.

The lack of protein and thus weight loss can also be the reason for flat hair so make sure you’re eating enough foods high in protein such as beans, red meat, peanuts, etc and of course using shampoos with enough protein and volumizing properties to give your flat hair a major boost.

Don’t forget, hair extensions such as Endless Hair Extension’s Clip Ins can give you the volume and length you want as you wait for your hair to grow out.

Magnified Volume Shampoo by CHI will also leave your hair nourished and thicker with protein and volumizing ingredients to strengthen and boost from the roots so it not only looks bigger but is actually fuller.

Best shampoo types for thick and curly/wavy hair

If you have straight hair, chances are that you dream of having curly hair. It’s just the way life works. Having thick locks does require extra treatment and the right shampoo of course. Thick and curly hair has the tendency to become frizzy and dry, more so when it’s humid or cold like during the winter. So the first ingredients you should be watching out for is smoothing out properties like coconut or argan oil which will give your hair the moisture it needs. Watch out for dryness with your thick and curly hair as this is usually a common problem that crops up. Don’t forget to make sure protein is in the shampoo to take care of those damaged curls. Look for phrases like “curl-protect” etc on the shampoo bottle.

Best shampoo types for colored hair

If you find yourself frequently coloring or dyeing your hair, you should be using the right shampoo to help retain your color for longer and nourish and replenish it as well. You want to find a shampoo that’s formulated specifically for colored hair so look for shampoo labels with such phrases as “color care” or “color protectant” etc.

You also want to make sure the shampoo has nourishing and moisturizing agents to heal your colored hair which is often times more prone to damage and dryness. Look for ingredients such as honey, plant oils, keratin and other proteins. Use purple shampoo if your hair is blonde or you dye it blonde to moisturize and brighten the vibrancy of your hair.

If you’re interested in learning more about protecting your treated hair, read our guide on colored hair care and know how to ensure your hair stays looking and feeling beautiful even after dyeing.

Color Last Shampoo by Biolage is just what you need if you color or dye your hair often as it’s formulated to protect and moisturize your hair’s color and keep dryness out. This shampoo doesn’t affect the actual color but rather prolongs it and adds vibrancy.

You’ll find this shampoo in the bags of professional stylists and consumers the like because of how beautiful this shampoo makes your hair a gorgeous cool silvery tone.

Conclusion

We hope that this extensive two-part series has helped you find the perfect shampoo for your hair type so you can achieve and maintain your dream hair. Don’t forget, whatever shampoo you choose, always make sure it doesn’t have alcohol, parabens, sulfates, sodium chloride, polyethylene glycol, formaldehyde, as well as synthetic colors and fragrances and always read the ingredient list before making the purchase.
